I ordered volume 1 of the French graphic novel adaptation of Bujold's The Warrior's Apprentice from Amazon UK, it not being available from Amazon US, and reports on Amazon CA over on the Bujold list indicating delayed shipping. (No, I have no French, but, hey, I know the story well...and am a Bujold fanatic.)

Today the shipping notice arrived via email:

Amazon.co.uk items (Sold by Amazon EU S.a.r.L.):

1 La saga Vorkosigan, Tome 1... £10.65

Shipped via Deutsche Post DHL (estimated arrival date: March 10, 2010).

So, is it being shipped from Germany, or is Deutsche Post DHL doing business in the UK? Or perhaps in France--maybe Amazon UK is ordering from the French publisher and having them ship directly to the customer.

In any case, I found the dispatch of a French publication, by a firm in England, via a German shipper....amusing. And neat.

My sister-in-law needs a new Palm, and neither of us has looked at what's out there recently. We're hoping someone can offer advice. Her current one is a Palm Zire 72. She needs mostly the organizer functions (calendar, address book), an easy to read screen, and it must run some games. ("Mom, can I play on your Palm?") She keeps a few ebooks around, but that's not a priority. She doesn't need a phone, camera, or Internet capability on it.

Any suggestions for current models that meet the criteria? Reliability is a plus--it will lead a hard life.

The trip to the upcoming funeral and family gathering (this coming weekend), and the various items I need to help with, are destroying what little bit of energy I was putting toward Christmas shopping. Or that's my excuse, anyway.

I did start on a list at the end of last week, in consultation with my sister-in-law. It's not that many people, really, but we need gifts from ourselves, gifts from my father (to other family members and for ourselves as well). And in addition to the Christmas round, we exchange small Hanukkah presents (well, I give them to the nieces, nephew, and sister-in-law, and generally get one in return), and my younger nieces has a Dec. 30 birthday. That all adds up to an appreciable shopping list.

I did go to the Container Store today, always a good place to look for small gifts especially from their "stocking stuffer" items. I encountered a number of too-cute-to pas-up items, did get one gift (for elder niece, will be from her granddaddy), but the one item I had spotted in the the stocking stuffer catalog was sold out, no more until February. What about the Buckhead store? Same deal. I guess it looked cool to a number of other people, too...

I needed to accomplish some kamikaze shopping tonight. Kamikaze shopping is my preferred style, anyway--set objective, make a single strike, done. In this case I need something to wear next week that's a step up from my very casual office wear (jeans or twill pants, cotton blouses and sweaters, etc) but not too far up. I'll be at a national workshop in Denver, and I'm both the organizer of it as of about 3 weeks ago (separate post on this soon, maybe) and am presenting 2 hour-long talks. And running the mini computer lab, but that activity doesn't impel me to change my wardrobe. I'd rather not spend a lot of money of any of this, first because I don't like to spend money on clothes anyway, and second because these occasions don't come along very often and the clothes won't get much use.

What I want.. )

What I found... )
If I get done at the office quickly tomorrow morning I'll try another thrift store (seeking a nice jacket, cheap), and then make a pass at Rich's and Macys. If I can stand that much shopping, that is. There are things in the closet that I could use, they just aren't quite the style I'd like to wear--but if my shopping-stamina gives out, they'll do.
