In the usual fashion, I don't have time to make this shorter. An unfocused and un-edited ramble follows...

After that, it was a pretty relaxing day. The folks next door called from Cancun to wish me a happy birthday, and the kids bemoaned the weather Tropical Storm Alex was causing. I took a short nap, went to Home Depot for some garden stuff and to the grocery store, baked cake-of-the-week (not one I'd choose for my birthday cake), grilled a steak for dinner, and went to Brusters for a kids' hot fudge sundae for my real birthday treat.

Now, what I really need is a weekend. How come tomorrow's Monday?

We discovered tenants in Granddaddy's garage, next door to my father's house. My brothers went out after dark Sunday night to try to get the power turned on so older brother could do some more cleaning, and discovered that the circuit breaker kept tripping. They heard a noise, looked up, and saw a raccoon making its way into the attic. Once inside, with flashlights, they found that the coons had gnawed through the ceiling boards in places (and some of the trash on the floor was thus explained), and even spotted a gray ear through one of the holes. Circuit breaker problems are probably explained by some damage to the wiring up there...

On the guest house visit, sadly, we found the bodies of two wrens. The guess is that they came in through the kitchen vent fan, an old style with large openings. We got the vent fan cover closed, but too late for the wrens.

And lastly the not-so-wild: cousin Cecil got into the backyard chickens craze, and got some Rhode Island Red chicks a few months ago. He showed up at the house Monday before we left with 3 dozen-and-a-half cartons of lovely brown eggs, "one for each of you". He's getting 10 eggs a day....

Despite good intentions and firm resolutions, we (my brothers and I) haven't made a lot of progress in clearing out my father's house. He died in June, and the only serious work we'd managed was to move vast quantities of papers--personal files, genealogy research, family papers, memorabilia, you name it-- from the vacant house to his old office space, after first removing almost as vast quantities of paper from the office itself. notes on previous efforts, and detail on this past weekend behind the cut... )

We're going to try to make another weekend with at least me and my brothers in February--don't know if younger s-i-l and kids will come on that one or not. And it may not work out, as I have a weekend committed to my annual JazzerThon event for breast cancer research and older brother only had one weekend available by his work schedule. We'll see if those two conflict.
