New grill

It seems I acquired a larger-than-intended gas grill to replace my 20-ish year old Weber Genesis 1000--the product line now called the Spirit series. I went to Lowes (free assembly and delivery....) early this week and made the purchase of a Spirit E-310, to be delivered Friday. Friday morning came a couple of calls to my voicemail saying my grill was damaged but they would get another one and deliver Saturday.

The truck arrived around 2, the delivery crew quickly carried it to the patio, and left. Bad consumer--I took a superficial look while they were here, but really only to make sure it was for natural gas and not LP. I started removing the packing tape and protective films, then decided to make sure the new cover I'd bought would fit....but it was too small.

I first got mad at Amazon, then checked again (really to make sure the larger size in the same brand would fit). Measured the grill. Measured the grates (easier than getting a tape on the overall length). Walked next door and measured Brian & Robbie's Spirit E-310. Concluded I have a Genesis E-310 on my patio, not a Spirit. You'd think the "Genesis" on the front would be a clue, but Weber has been playing around with the Genesis brand name for a while and I'd discounted that.

The upshot is that Lowe's offered to let me keep it at the price of the smaller one ($519 vs $719). I don't care about the color (dark brown, not the black I'd ordered), and while I don't often need a larger grill, I don't see too much downside in it. And I don't want to have to deal with a pickup, then another delivery.

Indeed, when the repair-guy-willing-to-come-on-Saturday appeared, the fridge was working. The fridge compartment was almost at the set temperature, and the freezer temp was headed down, at least. He shut it off and turned it back on, gave me a short lesson on good refrigerator noises ("if you don't hear the compressor running, that's bad", duh), delivered a rant on gov'mint mandates leading to shoddy appliance construction, and left. Charge: a bargain $45, and he'll come back within 30 days for no additional travel fee if the problem happens again.

Oh, and he made friends with Fish, who wandered up to investigate the stranger in his house and stayed when the stranger proved adept at head rubs. Fish eventually stretched out at his feet and let his belly be scratched--quite unusual for Fish-cat.

The weekend has been spent in a fog induced by the head cold (and medications), and I've accomplished little except unpacking and opening the week's mail. Just arose from a nap, and am contemplating if I will drag myself to the grocery store for supper fixings, eat out of the freezer, or just heat more of the soup I made for lunch. Nothing is particularly appetizing at this point...

My flight home was uneventful--I drowsed most of it while listening to Komarr on audiobook, a book I know so well it doesn't matter if I actually sleep through some parts. The interesting incident was before the flight when I was pulled out of the boarding line for extra screening by 3 TSA employees. I haven't even seen extra screening going on in several years. They searched my large over-the-shoulder bag, had me remove the cap from my water bottle (carried empty through x-ray, filled at a concourse water fountain) so they could wave a test strip over it, then thanked me and let me board. The rolling laptop case was ignored. I feel so much safer for this experience...

Anyway, sister-in-law graciously picked me up at the airport and whisked me home. I greeted the affection-starved cats, then went and bought milk before dosing myself with cold medicine and going early to bed. This morning, when I reached for that milk to add to my coffee cup, I found the fridge was at 70 degrees (F). Freezer was at 7. The settings are for 0 and 37. I tried playing with the controls, pushed the doors firmly closed, that sort of thing, then moved the frozen ice cream maker insert to the fridge to try to help keep some cool. Of course I could locate the owner's manual for every appliance replaced in the 2006 kitchen renovation except the fridge. It was time for my hair appointment, so I left.

On return, the fridge was at about 54, but the freezer was 12. I began calling repair places: Sears can come next Wednesday. The Appliance Doctor doesn't even answer the phone on weekends. GE Appliance Service can come Monday--I made that appointment, then kept calling. Finally got what appears to be a one-man operation who will try to get here today ("or tomorrow for sure!"). Meanwhile, the fridge is now almost at the setting of 37. The freezer is at 11. I guess I need to have a repair person look at it no matter what, even if the freezer should start getting to an acceptable temp.

There are two things on the schedule for today: an affiliate for Home Depot to measure the living room for new carpet sometime in the morning, and Inman Park Granite to repair the countertop problems. Inman Park called yesterday around 5:30 to confirm....but somehow the appointment changed from 3 PM to "somewhere between 2 and 4, he'll call when he's on his way". OK, I'll live with it.

This morning Measurecomp (?) calls (they were to call between 7 and 9 to say when they'd be coming--the call came at 9:30). They are so sorry, but the technician's computer crashed and he can't come measure carpet. Huh? It takes a computer to do the measure? I can see wanting a computer to record the data and maybe prompt for various questions to ask, but don't they have a backup system? (Like, duh, a piece of paper?) I begged for an appointment tomorrow, but (after checking with a supervisor and calling me back) that wasn't possible. So it'll be next week, and as I have conference calls scheduled every day Monday through Thursday at the office, it won't be until Friday. I can't find out how this affects the installation, because this company doesn't do that--they just measure, then transmit the information to the store salesperson who then handles the payment. Then it will move to a third company that will have to call me and schedule installation. I may not have new carpet before the influx of relatives for niece's bat mitzvah Oct. 28, especially as there's a week in there when I'm in Moultrie for the agricultural exposition.
