My car's in the shop today. They couldn't hear the rattle/thump/whatever sound, of course--shops never hear your car's mysterious noises. However, they found that the lower control arm bushings on both sides are cracked and need $$replacing$$. And the two front tires are below the safety level for tread by a good bit--and the first job requires alignment, so it's efficient to buy the tires from them and get it all balanced and aligned at once. I usually don't buy tires at the dealer, but gave in on it this time.

Oh, and an oil change, and grease a squeaky door, and the bill should be about $700. Now that I've googled on the bushings, I'm hoping they actually replaced the control arms, not just the bushings, for that price. And I hope that this stops the noise!

Diagnosis: cracked radiator and dead thermostat. $800+ to replace both. Further testing revealed no engine damage "at this time". Hmmm.

Also spotted: broken engine mount, burned out brake light bulb, leaking oil pan gasket. I debated briefly about postponing the gasket replacement, but went ahead. At least the bulb replacement was cheap.

Grand total: $1350. Let's not count the AAA upgrade for extra towing, the rental car, and the extra parking at the airport.

In the last episode of the Saga of the Car with the Radiator Problem, said car was ensconced in an Atlanta airport parking deck awaiting the maturation of my AAA upgrade to a level that pays for towing more than 5 miles.

Today the membership upgrade took effect. I planned for an afternoon excursion to deal with the car, hoping that Sunday afternoon would be slack time both at the airport and for AAA.
