I began the day meeting oregon_katy from piffle for breakfast at Bijou,Cafe, where we both had fresh orange juice and brioche French toast and piffled. Topics included Portland sightseeing, cats, geology, her work as a receptionist at a vet, animal rescues, beaver predation on trees, other pifflers we've met, and more.

I then headed back to the hotel to meet up with Todd, John, and our local guy, Bruce, who'd agreed to take us out to Mt. Hood. On the way, we got the tour of Bruce's home in Portland, and a condo he and his wife bought last year closer to Hood, on the Salmon River. We could have sat all day at the condo listening to the river rushing by and enjoying the cool air off the glacial stream, but instead we drove onwards, getting more and more spectacular views of Mt. Hood as we got closer.

We drove up to Timberline Lodge, built by the WPA in the 1930's and refurbished in the 1990's (I think). The sky was too hazy for a good view of the area, though Mt. Jefferson was visible. We had lunch there in the third floor bar, looking out at the surface of snow at the bottom of those third-floor windows. The second floor was getting some air conditioning by opening a window to the snow face so the cool air could flow in. Neat building, with lots of nice touches like the massive stair newel posts with carved bears on top, the stonework in the fireplaces, and the oversized andirons.

We then drove around the other side of Hood to a second ski area which was closed, crossing the White River glacier (and river) as we went. Then it was back to Bruce's condo, where we decided to walk for a bit fore exercise--around a few holes of a golf course, across a bridge over the Salmon, and back up a short road through the forest.

We drove back to town, collected 2 others who have arrived for the meeting, and went (without John, who wanted an early night) to Typhoon for Thai. I am now replete with Drunken Noodles, and am only disappointed that Moonstruck Chocolates was closed when we walked by.
