Denver

Well, I made it to Denver yesterday, more or less on time. It was not the smoothest trip I've had, due to a combination of factors: the government travel agency Web site stupidities, AirTran losing my new (aisle) seat assignments and replacing me in my original window seats (but they swapped me back, if in less desirable rows), my unfamiliarity with the AirTran system and concourses in Atlanta. I did have to wait for others at the Denver airport for a couple of hours, but we finally arrived at the hotel, got checked in, made a grocery store run, and then Krissi came to my room, we ate our deli stuff for dinner (it was 8 or 9 Mountain Time, so 9-10 Eastern from whence we both came), and went over the topic of Krissi's talk for the week. As I was supposed to share that talk with her and got her to agree to do the whole thing, I owed her the input on both content and organization.

Today was filled with meetings from the other workshop leaders, checking with the hotel on the room arrangements, and looking at other people's talks to be sure we're not duplicating content. We had planned to have a gathering of those of the workshop attendees who had arrived by dinnertime and then assemble a group to go to eat, but about 6 PM the driving snow started (Denver had high winds all day, and then the gray clouds of the front got here in mid-afternoon) and suddenly an excursion for dinner seemed much less attractive. One group did venture across Union to José O'Shea's (tolerable Mexican food), but I ended up with a group of 7 people in the hotel bar/grill. And then I retreated to my room to give my first talk one more run-through--it's the first full talk tomorrow morning. I'm moderately prepared...it should do, though it's not real polished.

The snow is supposed to be brief, though it will be cold tomorrow. It's just a rather sudden transition to Winter from Atlanta yesterday, where we were still a little on the 'unseasonably warm' side.

Isn't 8 or 9 Mountain Time 10 or 11 Eastern? Central Time is between those two time zones.

"unseasonably warm" is putting it kindly; we were known to use the ac & the heater during the same 24-hour period multiple days last week.

If you're going hiking in search of good restaurants, I hope you brought thermals of some flavor [whether or no the leopard fleece so beloved of [livejournal.com profile] commodorified, deponent doesn't want to know].

AirTran tends to hang out around Concourse C at Hartsfield-Jackson, where there is a Wendy's [which has been known to be open even before morning flights; I like something icecreamish to settle the tum before long flights], always of vital interest. Towel? Pff! Always know where your Wendy's[es?] are, preciouss. :)
