Quiet around here

My brother's family left for a week in Nassau this morning (joining my sister-in-law's extended family on vacation), leaving things rather quiet. Even though we don't necessarily have any contact every day, knowing the house next door is empty does make a difference somehow.

I didn't note that yesterday I met with a contractor--not about the still-under-design kitchen work, but about replacing countertops, sinks, faucets, and toilets in the two bathrooms. I'd like to get this done before starting the kitchen, as I want to be able to keep the people working on the kitchen completely out of the bedroom areas. The master bedroom, in particular, as it will be the cat refuge.

This is the contractor who did my last round of stuff--built-in bookcases, converting the carport to a garage (and fixing the sinking foundation thereof, too), replacing a patio door with a real door and windows, stuff like that. His construction manager for that job was a real problem, so I hope to use the bathroom counters as a test to see if I'm willing to let him bid on the kitchen. Anyway, he should call in a few days with an estimate.

Must get cracking on the shopping list for the kitchen, too--I've been procrastinating for too long...

If you have a recommendation for a contractor, please let me know! I want to have our deck turned into a screened porch, and I don't know where to even start.

This was Bob Connelly, of R.L. Connelly and Co. My problems with the earlier work his firm did for me were with the construction supervisor, who I gather "left the company" right after that job. I don't think I was the only one with a problem...

But I like Bob himself, and think he has a well-deserved reputation for doing quality work. I'm reserving final judgment until I see how the construction management on this bathroom work goes, and will then decide if I ask him for a bid on the kitchen.
