We had Thanksgiving dessert tonight. No, we're not confused: Thanksgiving dinner will be midday tomorrow. The idea is to spread those calories around a little, and maybe enjoy the dessert more because we're not stuffed from turkey and fixings. Supper was soup, fresh bread from the bread machine, sandwiches for those that wanted one, and pie.

This morning we made a chocolate chess pie, using a recipe from the Angus Barn in Raleigh, N.C. where we celebrated my oldest nephew's high-school graduation in May. This afternoon we made "Impossible French Apple Pie", one of those Bisquick recipes that's supposed to make its own top crust. Didn't work very well, but the result was very edible nonetheless. The chocolate chess pie was quite wonderful. Oh, and I bought a 6" pumpkin pie for my 5-year-old nephew--he's the only one in the family that likes it. He was quite chuffed over getting three desserts, where his sisters only got 2. (Not that he ate anything but the chocolate chess.)

Brief digression in today's cooking-grocery shopping-meal planning round: my sister-in-law and I went and bought my father a new fridge this morning, and had it installed this afternoon. It seems that the little puddles we've been finding in front of the old fridge were because the door seal had hardened with age and then split, letting the inner half of the seal sag downwards toward the floor and letting the resulting condensation drip on the floor. That fridge was at least 15 years old, if not more. Daddy didn't fight too hard when we declared it dead and not worthy of repair. He now has a new Amana freezer-on-the-bottom fridge, with icemaker (replacing the a model that was much the same)--we would have gotten a smaller size, but the only smaller one in stock had a drawer-type freezer that looked like it would be very inconvenient for getting to the ice tray. And it cost more than the big one we bought.

So, there's a new fridge, the floor got scrubbed under it and the trash compactor (which had to move to get the fridge in), various ancient foodstuffs from the back reaches of the fridge and freezer compartment were pitched, and we're still on schedule with the advance food prep for tomorrow. The turkey has been brined and is air-drying in the (spacious new) fridge, ready to go in the oven around 9:30. Then we'll make the squash casserole, get the green veggies ready to cook, stir the shrimp into the jambalaya stuffing, cook it all, and Eat!

Sounds delicious and like you're having fun!! YAY! :-D

(after your story about Angus Barn, I really wish we'd gone at least once. I mean, I lived in Durham for 7 and a bit years! Oh well...sometime)

For SURE!!

Oh, and if you ever get thereabouts, there's a really great Vietnamese restaurant in Greensboro called Saigon. Tom and I absolutely loved that place! :-)
