nlbarberI was puttering in the house last night, tackling little tasks in avoidance of the bigger ones that would be more help before we put the house on the market, when the lights went out. First thought was "what else has gone wrong while this house has been sitting vacant since Daddy died?". I soon realized the entire neighborhood was dark, and the morning paper said the outage was "across the county". Things were dark about 45 minutes where I was, though some areas still had no power this morning. Luckily I've been navigating this house for many years, so I got myself downstairs, found my purse and dug out a penlight, then actually found a flashlight with good batteries. For entertainment, I just continued my audiobook: Still Life by Louise Penny. (Very good so far, though I really don't pay close enough attention to deal with mysteries as audiobooks.)
The moon was bright, which helped with the navigation. However, the moonlight shot a chance to do a little star gazing without the big light glare from Moultrie's very bright and unshielded streetlights. Star gazing in metro Atlanta is pretty hopeless all the time, of course.
Update: the cause was substation equipment failure of some sort. City of Moultrie Utilities Director Roger King said a piece of equipment at the Moultrie Primary Substation on Buttermilk Alley failed about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. The substation’s protective equipment kicked in to prevent further damage to the substation and shut it down.
The shutdown caused significant power outages, as King said the substation feeds electricity for the City of Moultrie, Colquitt EMC and Georgia Power.
The shutdown affected every one of Moultrie’s 6,700 electricity customers, but only temporarily, King said. Moultrie and Colquitt EMC have the ability to redirect the electricity feed, so some customers were without power for only about 15 minutes.
