I went to the DeKalb Choral Guild concert last night, having found out about it via a forwarded announcement from [livejournal.com profile] filkferengi, as [livejournal.com profile] joyeuse13 and spouse are in it. I didn't realize until I was reading the program that another contact, one of my Jazzercise instructors, is also a member. Nice to have 3 familiar faces to look for in the chorus.

Very good concert all round. Nice blend of music from Gregorian chant to Schubert's German Mass to some spirituals, and a few modern-but-not-atonal bits as well. The amateur status of the chorus could be seen on a few ragged endings and entrances and in the lack of power in the male voices (it's so hard to find enough good male singers, especially basses), but they were well-rehearsed and the voices really blended well.

Favorite pieces: a set of Shaker songs, arranged by Kevin Siegfried. A Shaw/Parker arrangement of "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child" which had, as the program notes put it, "precarious harmony" that was unsettling and added to the mournful feel of the song. The Hymn to St. Cecelia that opened the program (and the Ave Maria by Biebl that followed it, though the DCG rendition suffered from my memory of the Chanticleer performance of the same piece). And the Schubert "Mass", actually short pieces to accompany the Mass.

I need to sign up for the DCG mailing list or whatever they have--I definitely want to hear more from this group.

Gakked from many friends...

1. Stop talking about politics for a moment or two.
2. Post a reasonably-sized picture in your LJ, NOT under a cut tag, of something pleasant, such as an adorable kitten, or a fluffy white cloud, or a bottle of booze. Something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS.
3. Include these instructions, and share the love.

catfish car

A Catfish Car, taken outside the Auburn building at the Sunbelt Ag. Expo in October. My alternative photo was the Viagra race car, also on exhibit at the farm show. Why sending the Viagra race car to the farm show has been considered a good marketing move for the last 3 years is beyond me, but then, the reason for the existence of a Viagra race car is too...

The weekend

Met with a designer on Friday about renovating the kitchen...more on this later.

Made it to Weight Watchers after that, and the discussion started on preparing for Thanksgiving. Lots of good things to think about, there. Prepare for the stress, as well as for the food...

Saturday...including the brownie ice cream pie )

Sunday... )

And that was it. Must shut down and get to bed, as I have to be in the office at 8 (it's usually more like 10 when I arrive) for a "writing project proposals" training course. Ugh.
