Agatha report

Agatha was indeed allowed to come home yesterday, and indeed had continued to refuse to eat at the vet's . I went in and got a short lesson in giving hairball medicine with a syringe (she's never been willing to lick a full dose off my finger, and can sling any that is put on a paw with sufficient force to embed it in the wall paint, rug, and nearby furniture), and took her home.

She promptly went under the bed, just in case I decided to put her back in the crate for another trip. Emerged briefly, and hid again when I took a step in her direction. I settled down at my computer with a cup of yogurt (the good Greek stuff) to finish some work, and after a few minutes she appeared and took over the spot under the desk lamp. The next time I picked up the yogurt, she sat up and gave a short, demanding "Awwp!" I offered a little yogurt on a finger, but that was rejected--she'd like a little luncheon in bed, thanks. So I fed her chicken-and-gravy baby food off a spoon, much to the envy of the other 2 cats. Am I well-trained or what?

This morning she demonstrated her great ability to find new hiding spots by disappearing about the time I was ready to try the hairball medicine/syringe trick. A good 15 minute search of all previously known hiding spots, in rotation, yielded no Agatha, and I was beginning to get worried--then found her curled in a little basket that holds things-to-be-mended, that was pushed back under low-hanging items in my closet. She just fits the basket when curled up tightly, and the the clothes that hang above it provide excellent camouflage.

Fish report: the seemingly bottomless bottle of antibiotic finally got emptied this morning, and the cystitis symptoms have eased. Fish will be unhappy to miss his spoonful of baby food tonight, I imagine. He apparently decided the medication process was not all that traumatic, as he never hid from me when I came to get him for the towel-wrapping.

Yikes! I hope they both feel much better soon. All my kitties send purrs and head-butts.

Have you tried rubbing the hairball medicine into her fur? I have a cat who can fling gobs of the stuff great distances, but when I rub it in enough that it's no longer a glob, he manages to get most of it into his insides. Of course, I have to hang onto him for dear life when I'm doing this...

Hairball medicine is very hard to clean completely off of anything. You've got my sympathies.

And yay for finding the bottom of the bottle of antibiotics!

Hey, whatever works.
