Miscellaneous things after a day tending my booth at the farm show:

The "heartland" is for Bush, God, and the Republican Party. T-shirts, stickers, and conversation attest to this. Brer Fox, he lay low.

Confederate flags are still a significant decorative motif among a large segment of the Southern population. A group is actively working to bring back the 3-years-dead Georgia flag with same.

EPA, which has been a big exhibitor for years (maybe 6 booths, where I rent 1 or 2, and 6 or 7 people) isn't here at all. They usually bring pollution-prevention stuff, pesticide safety, general educational material, stuff like that. I presume some round of budget cuts kept them away--will have to see if I can find out.

My sightseeing has included (so far) the World's Tallest Living Horse (a Percheron, 19.1 hands high); a quick trip through the Family LIving Building past the Ginzu knife guy, the 3 cookware demos, and the 2 miracle mop booths; a cutting horse demo; the overheated milk cow waiting for the next "dairy science" demo; through the alpaca building; past uncounted vendors of gizmos and gadgets for farmers; round past the tractor lots; and an unsuccessful pass at the electricity tent in search of free popcorn and water (they were out).

The crowd seems light this year, judging by the rate at which we are giving away pencils and CDs. Might be our change of location from one side of the building to the other, or maybe it's just a bad year. Or a bad day--there was a prediction of showers, though no rain fell until an hour before the show closed. Will see how tomorrow and Thursday go...

Exhibitor luncheon, 2 weeks before election day: the Governor of Georgia. Senator Saxby Chambliss. (Our other senator, the Republican-in-Democratic clothing Zell Miller, is not running for re-election). I may have spotted the Republican senatorial candidate. Many other politicians were probably there, but I managed to dodge 'em. Having seen this coming, I picked a seat near a side door into another part of the hangar (the luncheon is held in one end of the Maule Aircraft hangar), and escaped before the speeches started by ducking under the wings of three airplanes in various stages of completion.

Company name I never want to work for: Dickey-John. (What were they thinking!)
