Ivan and flooding
Sep. 20th, 2004 10:32 pmNo, no personal flooding, besides some wet spots in the crawlspace (discovered by the termite inspector)--no surprise as I saw the water at one corner of the house backing up the sidewalk and running down the brickwork of the wall.
Other parts of Atlanta, and the rest of the State was well, got significant flooding. My office put out a press release, which I put on the Web today. Three gages had new highs: two of those were in the metro Atlanta area. It's not just that Ivan dumped a lot of rain, but also that as we pave over more and more of the city, the creeks get the rainwater faster and the floods peak ever higher.
We missed the full set of data at Peachtree Creek at Atlanta--the instruments got wet and quit recording. I don't know if the gage shelter was actually under water, or if there was some other source of water. But a crew went and measured the flood peak, which is how that gage shows up with a record high. Someone was supposed to be trying to get it working again today, but I see there's no data showing yet. Maybe tomorrow.
