Storm has passed...for now
Sep. 17th, 2004 10:29 pmAfter some light rain and wind this morning, all is calm. Lots of small debris down, a few big trees down (though none very close to my house), most of the flooding on smaller streams is receding. We actually had a little sunshine this afternoon.
I spent a chunk of the afternoon making Vanilla and Lemon Scented Challah with Almonds, which the DD of D had posted to piffle. Came out very well, though rather larger than expected. The recipe calls for using a 10-inch springform pan: I had a 9-inch and a 12-inch, but no 10. Used a 10-inch cake pan instead, then made a foil collar for it after seeing the unrisen dough in it. The finished loaf was a disk 10 inches in diameter and 4 inches high.
I took it next door as my contribution to their Shabbat, and it was well received except by my younger niece, who found the tastes too strong. Or too unexpected. Or something--but she's in the midst of lots of asthma problems and all the medications affect her emotionally, so I don't take her reaction as a strong strike against the challah. Will have leftovers for breakfast...for a few days, I imagine.
